Weddings and parties are full of moments worth filming, but they are also some of the easiest places for a camera to become intrusive. A large rig can block other guests, distract the couple or get in the way of the official photographer and videographer.
As a guest, the goal is usually different from producing complete professional coverage. You are there to capture the atmosphere: friends arriving, short conversations, reactions during speeches, dancing, table details and the moments that happen between the formal photographs.
That makes a small, fast camera particularly useful.
Think like a guest first and a camera operator second
The best footage is rarely worth disrupting the event.
At a wedding ceremony, avoid stepping into the aisle or standing directly behind the couple simply because the angle looks better. During speeches, remain aware of the official video cameras and photographers. At a party, do not spend the entire evening pointing a lens at people who clearly do not want to be filmed.
A compact camera helps because it takes up less physical and visual space.
Instead of arriving with a large body, lens, cage and stabiliser, a small vlog camera can be taken out for a short clip and put away again immediately. That makes it easier to remain part of the event rather than turning every conversation into a filming setup.
Capture short moments rather than recording everything
There is rarely a good reason for a guest to record an entire wedding reception continuously.
Short clips are usually more useful later. Five or ten seconds of people entering the venue, glasses being raised, the cake arriving or friends reacting to a speech can communicate more atmosphere than twenty minutes of uninterrupted footage.
This also reduces storage and battery use.
More importantly, it keeps the camera from becoming the main focus of your evening. Record the moment, lower the camera and return to the conversation.
That approach is particularly effective when creating a short personal vlog or highlight edit rather than formal event coverage.
Mechanical stabilisation suits moving through a crowded room
Parties involve constant movement.
You may walk between tables, follow friends onto a dance floor or turn quickly when something happens behind you. Handheld footage from a conventional small camera can easily become shaky in these situations.
The current Osmo Pocket models use three-axis mechanical gimbal stabilisation. Instead of relying entirely on electronic cropping, the camera itself is physically stabilised as you move.
That is particularly helpful at a wedding reception, where setting up a tripod for every shot would be impractical.
It still helps to move carefully. Slow turns and deliberate walking will always look better than swinging the camera rapidly across a room. The gimbal makes smooth movement easier; it does not make rushed camera work invisible.
Low light matters more than maximum resolution
Wedding receptions often move from bright daylight into dim restaurants, marquees and dance floors.
This is where sensor size and lens aperture become more useful than simply choosing the highest available resolution.
Osmo Pocket 4 uses a new 1-inch CMOS sensor with a 20mm-equivalent f/2.0 lens. DJI specifies up to 14 stops of dynamic range in supported modes, which helps when the frame contains bright decorative lights alongside darker faces or interiors.
The wide 20mm view is also practical in crowded spaces. It allows several people to fit into the frame without requiring the person filming to keep stepping backwards into other guests.
For most casual wedding and party vlogs, this combination is already very well suited to the job.
Pocket 4P adds a useful portrait perspective
The Osmo Pocket 4P offers more flexibility when a guest wants footage that feels less like a conventional wide-angle vlog.
Its wide camera combines a new 1-inch sensor with a 20mm-equivalent f/2.0 lens. It also adds a dedicated 60mm-equivalent med-tele camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and f/1.8 aperture. DJI lists up to 17 stops of dynamic range for the Pocket 4P system in supported modes.
That 60mm view is particularly useful at weddings.
It can create more natural-looking portraits, isolate details such as rings, flowers or table decorations, and capture people from a slightly greater distance without physically moving into their space.
During speeches, for example, a guest can remain farther back while still getting a tighter view of the person speaking.
That makes Pocket 4P especially attractive when the goal is to capture both wide atmosphere and more intimate details with one small camera.
Do not treat the longer lens as permission to film everything
A 60mm camera makes discreet framing easier, but it should not become an excuse to film people secretly.
Weddings and private parties are personal events. If someone is having a private conversation, eating, or clearly uncomfortable around cameras, a longer focal length should not be used to turn that moment into content from across the room.
The better use is practical rather than covert.
Stay out of the official photographer’s line, remain at a respectful distance and use the tighter field of view to create cleaner compositions when appropriate.
ActiveTrack can help when you are part of the shot
One of the hardest things about filming as a guest is that there may be nobody available to operate the camera.
Osmo Pocket 4 supports the updated ActiveTrack system at up to 4× zoom, while Pocket 4P supports tracking across a wider range, up to 12× zoom in supported conditions.
For a party, the practical benefit is simple.
Place the camera on a small stable support, activate tracking and step into a short group shot instead of asking another guest to hold the camera.
Pocket 4P also supports Multi-Person Tracking. When additional people enter the shot, the gimbal can dynamically adjust framing to help keep the group included.
That can be particularly useful for small group moments before dinner or during a quieter part of the reception.
Tracking should still be used selectively. Leaving a camera rotating on a table throughout dinner is far more distracting than setting it up for one short clip and putting it away afterwards.
Audio is important during speeches
A wedding vlog is not only visual.
Short pieces of a speech, laughter around a table or a conversation with friends can become some of the most memorable parts of the edit.
The Pocket 4 supports direct connection with compatible DJI Mic transmitters through the OsmoAudio system, including multi-channel workflows.
For a guest, this does not mean putting microphones on the couple or interfering with the official audio setup.
A more natural use is recording your own piece to camera, a short message from friends who agree to participate, or a controlled interview away from the main ceremony.
For important formal speeches, the official wedding team should normally remain the primary recording setup.
Internal storage is useful when the day becomes hectic
Memory cards have a habit of becoming difficult to find exactly when something important is happening.
Osmo Pocket 4 includes 107GB of built-in storage, while Pocket 4P includes 103GB. At DJI’s standard bitrate, Pocket 4 can hold approximately 220 minutes of 4K/60fps video internally, and Pocket 4P approximately 210 minutes.
For a guest recording short clips throughout a wedding day, that is a substantial amount of space even before adding a microSD card.
The value is less about trying to fill the entire internal drive and more about having a fallback. If the card is forgotten or unexpectedly full, the camera can still record.
For a one-off event, that extra layer of readiness matters.
Battery planning should match the way guests actually film
DJI quotes up to 240 minutes operating time for Osmo Pocket 4 and up to 210 minutes for Pocket 4P under controlled test conditions. Both can also charge to 80% in around 18 minutes under the specified charging conditions.
Those figures are not the same as continuous real-world wedding recording with tracking, frequent screen use and high-resolution video.
As a guest, however, the camera is unlikely to run continuously.
That creates natural charging opportunities. During dinner, travel between venues or a quiet period before the evening reception, a short USB-C charge can restore a useful amount of battery.
A battery handle is also supported if a particularly long day requires more reserve.
Pocket 4 or Pocket 4P for weddings?
For most guests, Osmo Pocket 4 is the simpler choice.
Its 1-inch sensor, 20mm f/2.0 lens, mechanical stabilisation, ActiveTrack and 107GB of built-in storage provide everything needed for wide group scenes, walking footage and general party atmosphere.
Pocket 4P is the more creative option.
The combination of 20mm and 60mm perspectives makes it much easier to move between group shots, room atmosphere, portraits and detail footage without changing lenses or carrying another camera. Its wider tracking range and dual-camera setup also provide more flexibility when filming from the edge of a room rather than stepping into the centre of the event.
That makes the 4P especially suitable for guests who want to create a polished wedding or party vlog rather than simply collect a few memories.
The best camera is the one people stop noticing
A good guest video should feel close to the event without making the camera part of every moment.
Film in short bursts. Stay out of aisles and professional shooting positions. Use wider shots when you are close to people and a tighter perspective when you can remain farther away. Keep tripods small and never place equipment where someone could trip over it.
